The Auburn Senior Center was created by a group of determined seniors, headed by William “Bill” Burback. Bill felt that seniors needed a place where they could come and keep out of a rocking chair. His dreams inspired all his friends; together they set out to accomplish this goal.
Through lots of determination and commitment they achieved the impossible creating a space at Dewitt Center. The Center doors opened in October of 1980, and for 36 years the Dewitt Center was their home.
In mid-2015 the Center was asked to leave Dewitt Center and was housed in an office building in downtown Auburn until the lease expired on September 30, 2020.
In October 2021 we opened at our new site in North Auburn. Today, Auburn Senior Center has over 800 plus members from three counties: Placer, El Dorado and Nevada. Nearly half are active in daily activities including volunteering at the Center.
I have lived in Northern California since 1976 and have resided in Meadow Vista since 2012. I have been involved in the construction industry for over 30 years.
In 2005, I became involved with the Pleasanton and Fremont Senior Centers, joining their woodcarving groups. In 2012, upon moving to Placer County, I was a caregiver for both my father and mother-in-law. I volunteered with Seniors First, joined a woodcarving group in Grass Valley, and eventually started a woodcarving group at the Auburn Senior Center.
I have always had a passion for helping others and look forward to being of assistance to our local Senior Center.
I am a lifelong resident of Placer County. I have been a business owner, board member of several non-profits, an administrative government employee for 27 years, and a trainer and consultant for a Fortune 500 company for 11 years. My interests include music, art, cooking, coordination and organization.
As a senior myself, I am excited to be a part of ASC. I plan to contribute my time, skills, and talent to be a part of this successful team. I have been an active ASC member for the past several years; volunteering with special events and supporting the tax desk. I appreciate the opportunity to contribute and serve ASC. Hope to meet you soon!
I was born and raised in Northern California. Resided in Sunnyvale, CA from 1973 until 2017. I worked in the medical field for over 40 years, retiring from Sutter Health in 2017.
I moved to Auburn in 2017, volunteering at Sierra Nevada Hospital in the emergency room. In 2018, I volunteered at Sutter Auburn Faith Hospital and joined the Senior Center, volunteered at the front desk and tax desk during tax season. I have enjoyed being a member and volunteering and participating in exercise classes offered at the center and working with our members and volunteers.

Mary has lived in the Auburn area since 1989. She has worked in the local education industry, starting at the Montessori School and then The Auburn Union School District. After working in education, Mary transitioned to a career at CalFire where she worked for 12 years in the Communications Office in Sacramento. She retired from CalFire in 2019 and has since volunteered at a local thrift store as well as for reading programs at the local elementary school. She discovered the incredible value that the Senior Center provides the community through her own experience of using the Center for valuable information and resources. She decided she wanted to contribute to this value by becoming a volunteer, a member and now a part of the board of directors.
Sue was trained as a physical therapist and worked many years providing home care, primarily to a geriatric population, in the Bay Area. She returned to school later and earned her Masters degree in Public Administration, while being her mother’s caregiver during the last 3 years of her life. She retired from an administrative role with Kaiser Permanente in 2011 and moved with her husband to Truckee. Unleashing her passion for seniors, she joined the Board at Sierra Senior Services, the Meals on Wheels provider in the Truckee-North Lake Tahoe area. She served as secretary there for more than five years before moving to Auburn. Since then, she has volunteered with Placer County Senior Peer Counseling, as well as serving with The Good Life, a seniors ministry at Bayside Church in Granite Bay. Hobbies and interests include grandchildren, quilting, cooking and travel–not necessarily in that order!
